Bulky Trash/ Electronics Recycling Nets 21 Tons of Discards: 27,655 pounds of Electronics and 15,000 pounds of metal
Keep Sandy Springs North Fulton Bulky Trash/ Electronics Recycling Day on several Saturdays in October was a big success, especially since the collected materials likely would have ended up in a landfill or dumped on a roadside, according to KSSNFB executive Karin Zarin. “This year we collected 231 monitors, 228 computers and 45 televisions, for a total of 27,655 pounds of electronics, and 15,000 pounds of ferrous (steel) items, 21 tons altogether.”
“Not only does bulky trash & electronic collection help the environment, it provides recycled electronics and furniture for reuse,” says Zarin. “When we started bulky trash collection several years ago we expected to receive items ready for disposal. When area residents wanted to discard some nice items of furniture and computers, we began to focus on a second life for these items. We partner with Atlanta Recycling Solutions for our electronics. They wipe the data for security, pick up the items, process them and send to a recycling end market, all at no charge to us. The best thing is that all this is kept out of the landfill. The monitors are filled w/toxic materials.”
Old tools and lawn mowers, filing cabinets bicycles, water heaters, wrought iron fixtures were the main components in 15,000 pounds of ferrous materials collected, twice as much as collected last year. Zarin is excited that this metal will be kept out of a landfill and recycled into useful items.
Metro Atlanta Furniture Bank filled up an entire truck of furniture from collected items. “They provide housing solutions for AIDS patients and homeless people settling into their first residence off the street. They are one of a few charities which will take gently used mattresses,” explains Zarin. Other items included mirrors, headboards, tables and couches.
“Over 21 tons of electronics, old stoves, windows, car parts, mattresses, and furniture were collected responsibly this year, keeping refuse from being illegally dumped or littered, and gave new life to many items for recycling,” says Zarin. For more info email keep.ssnf.beaut@mindspring.com .
